Despite miners, cattle ranches, cowboys, and modern-day campers and hikers, a Winchester '73 rifle leaning against a scrub juniper tree in the high Nevada desert was undisturbed for 130 years. The Utah juniper pine tree that had been there for hundreds of years, surviving hot summers and harsh winters, protected the rifle that was left there.

There are many dangers in the high Nevada desert frontier in the Old West of the late 1800's - harsh weather, wild animals, long and dusty cattle drives, dry-gulching bandits, and the adventure and struggle to tame a hostile land.

Read about how a Shoshone boy and his father on a hunting trip were led to the old tree after discovering a hidden cave in the area. Years later, a cowboy and his partner were also led to the juniper pine tree because of the dangers they encountered at the same cave.

Learn how the cowboy's rifle was left leaning against the tree. It stayed there, protected by the tree, for about 130 years until found by a modern-day explorer.
